Het duurde echter tot de lancering van de eerste kunstmatige satelliet, de Spoetnik 1, door de Sovjet-Unie in 1957, voordat teledetectie een belangrijkere rol begon te spelen in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De lancering van Spoetnik 1, op de voet gevolgd door Spoetnik 2, markeerde het begin van decennia van snelle ontwikkelingen op het gebied van satellietgebaseerde teledetectie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De lancering van Landsat 1 in 1972 door de Verenigde Staten was een keerpunt in de evolutie van teledetectie via satellieten. In hetzelfde jaar werd de IKONOS-satellietsensor gelanceerd door MAXAR Technologies Inc.
